A front page story in The New York Times says Fulton Street Mall is undergoing an upgrade. H & M is heading there, among other large retailers. The headline calls Fulton St. “an eclectic shopping hub,” which is a bit off the mark—it’s a low-income outdoor shopping mall bustling with sneaker, wig and discount clothing and electronic shops.
Now, rents are rising and changes are afoot. Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack, a popular gourmet hamburger stand in Manhattan, is heading to Fulton St. and is sure to be a draw.
“The hope, for property owners and public officials, is that Fulton Street can become something like 34th Street or Lower Broadway in Manhattan. Rents are soaring, and a $15 million renovation is tidying the ramshackle strip, which will soon have a new Filene’s Basement,” the story says.
