A 720-unit condo building is nearing completion on the banks of the fetid Gowanus Canal, at 365 Bond Street. The controversial Lightstone Group development will feature studios and one-bedroom apartments. Neighbors are up in arms about the big building and the floods it’ll bring: flood of cars that’ll compete for parking; flood of kids who’ll compete for ever-more-scant public school seats; flood of toilets flushing that’ll compete for space during rain events in the cancer-causing waters of the canal.
One hopes that the battle between the city and the U.S. EPA over the feds’ proposal to close Douglass-Degraw pool — which sits on one of the most polluted land sites along the canal — won’t delay the federal cleanup of the Gowanus.
