News and Culture in Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, Dumbo and the surrounding area in Brooklyn, N.Y.
South Brooklyn Post is a news magazine covering interesting and pertinent things in the area that used to be known as South Brooklyn — Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Red Hook and the Gowanus area, and including Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo. We’ll cover schools and crime and great people doing great things, and write about only the very best in what’s to eat, drink, see and do in our little village-like community.
We love what’s old about this neighborhood and what’s new. We’ll profile both. We’ll look under rocks to find precious treats and ugly bugs.
As a magazine that’s all local, all the time, we hope to become a go-to place when you are looking for places to go spend your time or money. We won’t recommend it if it’s not great.
Editor and writer Lisa M. Collins has 15 years of experience as a newspaper and magazine reporter, writing for New York Magazine, Vanity Fair and other outfits. She’s done investigative reporting for The Detroit News and Detroit’s Metro Times alt-weekly, covering slum lords and corrupt politicians and illegal toxic waste dumps, with a stint as a food, arts and culture editor.
Collins’ grandparents owned small newspapers most of their lives, and made a good living at it. Her dad grew up on the newsroom floor, while her grandmother was lugging heavy metal type around, laying out each word, for each page, and getting ink all over the place. A banker in a small town in Texas bought her grandparents’ home for a profit to get them out of town, as the paper was revealing his shady ways. She figures news is an essential element for a thinking, informed life, and so why not try to keep the small newspaper alive in the digital realm.
