I’m sorry to join the din, but this feels like the beginning of the end — J.Crew is coming to Court Street. It’s moving into the corner space at Court and Pacific that for the last 13 Â years has been Pacific Green gourmet grocery store.
I don’t know why it feels like a big deal, after Bare Burger chain, Trader Joe’s and Barney’s around the corner, and the slate of new chain-type lunch bodegas have opened on Court. But somehow, a J. Crew — it feels like a big change. Remember when Court Street was dusty underpants stores, smoky lotto stands and meat-market grocery shops?
The owner of Pacific Green tells Gothamist that he was pushed out by the landlord who wanted higher rent.
Esquire Magazine did a survey of Twitter rantings about the move. We’re big news people.
And quite a momentous three years since I wrote, in 2011, “Is Court the new Smith?”
