Saturday, July 30, 9 a.m.: The 3rd annual Brooklyn Waterfront Epic Ride runs from Newtown Creek in Greenpoint around Brooklyn’s 27-mile waterfront and onto Rockaway Beach.
This year, the route has been expanded in size and scope. After turning away riders in prior years, Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and the Transportation Alternatives Brooklyn Volunteer Committee are taking the lid off of the numbers of participants. The route will be marked allowing riders to travel at their own pace. In addition, the ride will now feature the Jamaica Bay Greenway as well as the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.
This ride highlights the potential of a complete 27-mile Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and a completed Jamaica Bay Greenway. On the ride the Jamaica Bay Greenway Coalition will release the new Users Guide to the Jamaica Bay Greenway, a pocket sized map of the greenway that highlights the planned completed greenway, access routes to reach it, points of interest, kayak and human powered boat launches, and representative cycling distances.
Refreshments will be provided at Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field and the ride will end at the new Rockaway Beach Club food vendors on the boardwalk.
The ride will start at the foot of Manhattan Avenue at Newtown Creek in Greenpoint at 9 a.m. Riders must arrive at 8:30 a.m. to check in. Registration is now open at www.brooklyngreenway.org.
