UK Paper: Elephants Seem to Use A Physical Sign Language

By Lisa M. Collins

An AP story that turned up in a UK paper reviews a 40-year study by scientists of elephants in Kenya that suggests they use a series of visual cues and sounds to determine what route to take on a journey. They also seem to flirt and babies suck their trunk in lieu of a pacifier.

Why is this in South Brooklyn Post, your home for all news and culture and dining in Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and points nearby, you ask? Well, the headline had to do with, “Not so Dumbo,” and we cover Dumbo, and, well, it’s interesting. Elephants seem to keep happy in this 90-plus degree heat that’s roasting us New York City humans. I’m locked up in my apartment with the shades drawn and the AC going. How about you?
