Bioswale Gardens Headed to Carroll Gardens

By Lisa M. Collins

The city Department of Environmental Protection announced it will install $46 million worth of bioswales around the outer boroughs, including several dozen around Carroll Gardens and the Gowanus area. Bioswales are sidewalk gardens featuring hardy plants and rocks that help absorb water during heavy rains or storm events, and to clean and hold that water to prevent it from running off into the Gowanus Canal (and collecting flooding sewage on the way, which is what happens after major rain events in this area).

The city will install more than 2,000 of the sidewalk gardens. Great news !
