In the Spotlight

Last Week for “Momma Love”

By Lisa M. Collins

NYC photographer Ali Smith is releasing a hard-bound book — backed by iconic feminist Gloria Steinem — about the beauty, joy, trials, tribulations, pains and monotonies of modern motherhood. She’s looking for community support through Kickstarter.

Smith has suffered the slings and arrows of book publishing. She had a publisher, but the publisher folded and took with it money she had put toward the book. So now, she’s self-publishing through a Kickstarter campaign. She’s got until April 10 to raise $35,000 — she’s raised $18,765 so far.

The former ballerina and member of traveling rock bands, Smith says this book is about honesty, and creating community. In that spirit, the accomplished photographer is visiting Staten Island this Saturday, April 6, from noon to 3 to take photos — for free — of families who lost family photos during Hurricane Sandy.

Check out Ali Smith, and donate to her Kickstarter campaign!
