Colonie Reviewed in N.Y. Times

I ate at Colonie, the newish restaurant on Atlantic Avenue, this week. The food was phenomenal, the atmosphere, divine, the service, friendly and professional. The farm-to-table restaurant, opened in February, is a must-visit …. it’s hip and rustic at the same time: raw wood, exposed brick, a wall of plants and herbs, high ceilings, and great music. It’s so good you better make a reservation: It’s packed nearly every night.

In today’s New York Times, food reviewer Sam Sifton gave Colonie one star. He spoke highly of the food, saying: “Alex Sorenson, the chef, who was at Mas (Farmhouse), serves a familiar menu of eggs and mushrooms and pork belly and scallops and beets. But his cooking does not seem overexposed or needlessly trendy. There is brightness to it, a clever happiness that comes through on the plate.”

Sifton suggested the raw oysters with cucumber vinegar sauce, and nearly raved about his steak, the roasted mushrooms with pear, the beet salad and the seared artichokes. He marveled at the menu item dubbed, “The egg,” a fried egg on spelt with beans, calling the egg white a “transgressive, delicious act.”

He ordered readers to select the winter’s parsnip gratin, and calls the sticky date cake with salted crème fraîche ice cream “marvelous,” and the best sweet dish in Brooklyn Heights. He had some beefs about spotty service and thought the fish was overcooked.

The Times reviews less than 60 restaurants each year.

Bravo to the young ownership team: Elise Rosenberg, Emelie Kihlstrom and Tamer Hamawi, who previously worked together in Manhattan at Public and Double Crown.
