Little PS 32 in Carroll Gardens, at Hoyt between President and Union streets, is getting a new Gifted and Talented program. The program starts this year with one kindergarten class, which will take place in the little red trailers behind the school. Each year, a grade will be added—so kids who start in kindergarten this year will proceed to First Grade next year.
A tour for parents of kids who tested into the gifted/talented program will take place Monday, May 2 at 8:45 a.m.
Parents on Tuesday received notices stating whether their 4-year-olds tested into gifted and talented, either on a district-wide or city-wide basis. In true New York City, “You Have 10 Minutes to Apply and You Better Do It Now Or Forgettaboutit” style, the Department of Education requires parents to select a program in two weeks, by May 10. That means touring, researching and making your top choices by May 10, then the DOE lets you know where you get in.
According to Becky Alford, the union rep for teachers at 32, the school’s two preschool classes will remain as is, in the red trailers behind the school (one of this area’s best kept secrets. My daughter attends pre-K at 32 and we all love it).
This fall, PS 32 will have two pre-K classes, four kindergartens and three 1st Grade classes, all in trailers behind the school. The little kids have their own playground area. Near the pre-K and kindergarten rooms, a parent-led raised-bed fruit and vegetable garden will debut this year.
“We are excited to showcase our enrichment opportunities, newly renovated play yard, and our soon to be renovated state of the art Library/Technology center,” Alford said.
