Music for Aardvarks is launching new music and movement classes for toddlers and babies at If I Were a Toy, a toy shop located at the corner of Court and Carroll streets. The classes are fantastic — with lively, catchy tunes sung by the talented singer and guitarist Jo Solomon (formerly of the indie band Stretch Princess), and her assistant, Mary Jo.
I’ve taken Solomon’s Music for Aardvarks classes in Park Slope, and at The Moxie Spot on Atlantic Avenue, and I’m a big fan. They get me up and moving and dancing, always good for the morning time, and my one-year-old loves the music and funny routines, like using drum sticks to play-act like animals, shaking instruments and dancing under colorful scarves. He started trying to drum at home after his second class.
The classes explore music through song and gesture, dance and movement, rhythm training and instrument play, using original music that celebrates the lives of children growing up in an urban environment. Written by David Weinstone, songs like Taxi, City Kid, and Subway provide children with a positive image of their world and help them relate to their surroundings.
