Drugs in our Water Supply?

By Lisa M. Collins

New York City tap water is some of the cleanest in the world, and comes gushing down to the city from upstate water sources. Yet an investigative series by the Associated Press found trace levels of pharmaceutical and veterinary drugs in the water supply, and a New York City water department that was tight-lipped about discussing the findings. The AP found the drugs — often flushed down the toilet, where they eventually enter water bodies that are treated before entering the drinking water supply — in water systems around the country.

Estrogen was also found in the water supply. Some have linked the growing levels of Estrogen to early-onset puberty in girls, and larger breasts for all. Livestock waste and increased levels of soy products in the food chain are linked to the sources of the Estrogen.

A little research found that the Britta water filters clean out most of the Estrogen from tap water.
