Lucali owner and pizza chef Mark Iacono says he’s closing his legendary Henry Street pizzeria for renovations. “Maybe for a month, two months, three months, however long it takes to get the work done,” Iacono told South Brooklyn Post.
The chef, who designed and built the rustic, beautiful and cozy restaurant over a two-year period, said he isn’t going to change the look of the place, but just do some needed repairs (phew!).
Iacono opened Lucali in 2006 in a casual way, with a soft opening, and the place has been packed ever since. It was quickly written up everywhere; namely, at first, on blogs, and then in The New York Times. Iacono is yet to have his grand opening.
The restaurant needs some work to the pizza oven, the office and elsewhere, Iacono says.
I’m sure many of you, like me, will wish you could have snuck in one last pie adorned with all-beef pepperoni, imported basil and cheese, before the closure. Alas. We’ll have to wait.
Lucali pizza pie, we’ll miss you until your return…
