Fath Nagi Zookari says he’s always dreamed of owning his own home, and his own deli. Looks like his dream’ll come true. Thursday the deli manager, who works in the Bronx and lives in Boerum Hill, won $1,000,000 playing Mega Millions Megaplier.
Zookari is 29, and travels home to his native Yemen every couple of years. He’ll now go home more often, he says. He’s lived in NYC since he was 12.
The winning second-place ticket was bought March 27 at the Paradise Deli Grocery on LaFayette Avenue in Brooklyn. Zookari had a one in 3.9 chance of winning. He’ll receive his award as a one-time payment of $623,040.
New York’s lottery is the most profitable in the country, raising $2.8 billion for the state, as a sort-of voluntary, self-tax people impose on themselves for the chance to win. The lottery raises 14 percent of the state’s education fund for local school districts. The money is distributed by the same formula used to dole out other state education funds, which takes into account a district’s size and income level.
