Around the city and nationwide, police officers are getting shot at, at increasing rates. Just this weekend, at approximately 3 a.m. this past Saturday, police officers patrolling in the vicinity of Columbia Street, by the Red Hook Housing Development, spotted a man consuming a beer in public view. When the officers attempted to stop the individual, he ran away while firing several shots at the officers, according to the 76th Precinct.
The officers returned fire, hitting the man in the shoulder. The man managed to avoid capture. Early Sunday, 24 hours later, the police apprehended the suspect without further incident.
Eight police officers have been shot already in New York City in 2012, compared to three in all of 2011. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said he is “sick” of guns turning the city into a shooting gallery. Read more at the The New York Times.
In more alarming news, the FBI has commissioned a report that shows that the number of police officers killed nationwide in the last two years has risen 75 percent.
