On Thursday the city’s Panel for Education Policy approved an expansion of PS 8 to include a middle school. Parents in teh district, which spans Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo, had long rallied for the expansion, as the district lacked a middle school.
“Tonight’s vote to approve the new P.S. 8 middle school is great news for Brooklyn! By heeding our calls and formalizing the new middle school, DOE is helping to ensure the continued success of P.S. 8 and creating better options for all District 13 students,” said Sen. Daniel Squadron in a statement.
PS 8 was not long ago an underutilized school. But the community embraced it and now it’s filled to capacity, and a popular option for Heights and Dumbo families.
The middle school will be five blocks from the elementary school, located in the heart of Brooklyn Heights, in the Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School.
