Brooklyn Journalists Mourned

By Lisa M. Collins

It’s a sad day: A fearless and award-winning war photographer from Brooklyn Heights, Chris Hondros, 41, who was planning to marry in August, has been killed in Libya, documenting the firefights between rebels and government loyalists. Killed alongside him in a mortar blast was Williamsburg documentary film-maker Tim Hetherington, 40. British-born Hetherington was best-known for his Oscar-nominated film Restrepo, about U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has lowered the American flag over Borough Hall to half mast in memory of the two men, who documented the front lines in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Africa and elsewhere.
