The Van Horn Sandwich Shop on Court and Baltic is open, and already, folks are cueing up for the lovely southern-influenced sandwiches and draft beers (including Sixpoint and Blue Point Toasted Lager poured from a very clean tap). I stopped in with my little one for a pulled pork sandwich, with house-made slaw and pickles: two thumbs up. The service was Southern-style friendly. The little one had a peanut-butter and jelly with house-made peanut butter.
We’ll have more on this little treat run by an owner/architect from Chapel Hill, N.C., and his childhood pal who’s worked in the kitchen at Roberta’s, when our intrepid photographer gets back from his black diamond exploits out in Utah. We’ll regale you with mouth watering photos of sandwiches like the bacon-lettuce-pimento cheese ($8), the side of hush puppies ($3), and for those watching the waiste-band, the house chicken salad, with mixed greens, slaw, onion and buttermilk ranch ($12). For now, you’ll have to take my word for it. Stop in for a taste, ya’ll, and ask yourself: Why is the sky Carolina blue? (Answer: Because God is a Tar Heel).
