Gowanus United is holding a rally to keep the area from being HQ for Brooklyn parolees
Gowanus United, a group that formed to fight the state’s proposed mega parole center on 2nd Avenue, is holding a rally on Wednesday afternoon to send a message to state and local politicians. The state began building the parole center, which is planned to take 300 to 400 convicts a day as they check in with their parole officers.
The community was not notified of the plans, and in recent years, the Gowanus area has become home to not only artists, galleries and art studios but also families, day care centers, after-school centers, gyms and parks. Residents and workers around the Gowanus area are concerned about the massive influx of released offenders walking past homes and schools.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Community Board 6 (the local advisory committee to the City Council) are each raising questions and publicly supporting a change in the location of the facility. But the state Department of Corrections is constructing a building specifically for the parole center, and some state officials have said that parolees generally do not linger after they check in with a parole officer.
