2014 Proteus Gowanus Benefit GalaÂ
The Gowanusian Ball
A Celebration of Disorderly Conduct & Delightful Derelicton
Down By the Canal
Thursday, May 15, 7 – 10 pm
Strange creatures from the Gowanusian mud will cavort with you as we drink, dance and conduct ourselves badly near the banks of our nasty, beloved canal.
Hear the music of the Gas Drip Bard with Launa Schweizer and the Buffalo Nickels and water songs by Sara Bouchard; meet the Merman of the Gowanus; consult the Digital Dowser about the ghost streams in your basement; get the inside story on Sludgie the whale, whose skull will be ‘in da house’; dance the Gowanusian Waltz; be seduced by the Poetry Brothel; hear gorgeous poems of the Gowanus and Newtown Creek, and more!Â
Gowanusian attire will not be discouraged!
Join us in thanking our 2014 Gowanusian Honorees for working to protect our waterways:
Alex Prud’homme, author of The Ripple Effect: the Fate of Freshwater in the 21st Century and Hydrofracking: What Everyone Needs to Know
Curtis Cravens, author of Copper On the Creek and Senior Program Manager for the NYC Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency.Â
Daniel Wiley, SW Brooklyn Community Coordinator  and coordinator of waterfront community initiatives for Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez.
Libations and comestibles have been generously donated by Ample Hills Ice Cream, Brooklyn Brewery, Chief Gowanus Gin, Brooklyn Winery, Runner and Stone, The Pines and more.
