Chinese New Year

By Lisa M. Collins

chinese new yearThe Chinese calendar started 4,712 years ago. That is awesome. This year is the Year of the Horse, and it begins on Friday, Jan. 31.

Also called the Lunar New Year, because the Chinese calendar is based on the moon’s cycles, the Chinese New Year is the major annual event in Chinese culture. And there’s an awesome party and parade in Chinatown to mark it.

This year the parade is Sunday at 1 p.m. The big dragon floats and huge lion masks, dancers and marching bands, and lots of loud fire-popping, cracking and smoking, will twist down Mott and East Broadway, and up Eldridge Street to Forsyth. The parade will begin at Hester and Mott.

The parade ends around 3 p.m.
