I just saw this on Huffington Post, which for some reason covers our neighborhood with gusto. Apparently, the NYPD has shut down the tours of the old subway tunnel under Atlantic Avenue due to safety concerns. The tours were popular and drew lines of people along the side of Trader Joe’s who’d wait for their turn to enter the oldest below-ground subway in North America.
This from Huffington Post: At the abandoned Atlantic Avenue tunnel, 0pened in 1844 and dubbed the Cobble Hill Tunnel, Huffington Post wrote about an event that Rooftop Films was throwing called “Trapped in the Tunnel” in which films were showcased in the abandoned tunnel, along with an accompanying tour by tunnel aficionado Bob Diamond.
But before the event could launch, NYPD shut down the tunnel for safety reasons.
No word on when or if the tunnel will reopen for tours.
