Living in Brooklyn, it almost seems as if Irene was nothing more than a major rain event. But as we’ve heard on the news, the storm devastated New York’s Catskills region and Vermont, and huge chunks of places like New Haven Connecticut only just got their power turned back on. The flooding damaged trains and sadly, wiped out several century-old historic covered wooden bridges in the region.
The American Red Cross is sheltering some 8,000 people and has provided shelter and services to thousands more, and is asking for help. The organization needs donations and blood—blood drives were cancelled due to the storm.
