Szot at Muriel Guepin

By Lisa M. Collins

The Muriel Guepin Gallery on Bergen Street is featuring works by local painter Robert Szot, though May 30.

Szot‘s new canvases explore the artist’s internal dialogue as he attempts to construct his role in a new and unfamiliar circumstance. Thin layers of activity peer through a more dominant foreground of broad color fields. The artist re-works canvases until the composition has reached a more complex resolution. Fine details are sometimes marred or sacrificed while other canvases become dynamic mazes of color and form.

Szot moved to Henry Street and Atlantic Avenue in 2001. He grew up in Houston, Texas. He says he’s been lucky in NYC, and luck brought him to this neighborhood. So, he stays.

“The neighborhood has always had a novel small town feel to it,” Szot says. “After ten years I know my neighbors like I know my family. Good, dependable people that have a genuine interest in your life.

“The neighborhood has changed of course these last three years or so. It’s much busier now. Not to the point of being overbearing but the change is palpable. I used to have the street to myself on a Tuesday afternoon, but those days are long over,” Szot says.

“Painting in Brooklyn is paradise. Space to work and an eager and educated public make a perfect cocktail for personal expression. I am eternally grateful.”

Szot has exhibited throughout America and internationally. He’s shown with The Painting Center and Melody Weir in New York and with the Saatchi Gallery in London. His work can be found in private collections worldwide.

A portion of the artist’s proceeds will be donated to Rett Syndrome research.
