Through April 30: The Institute for Urban Design is holding a “crowd-sourcing” project, By the City / For the City (http://urbandesignweek.org/by-the-city). Through April 30, New Yorkers can submit ideas for sites in their neighborhoods they’d like to see receive some fresh design attention, from parks and streetscapes to the city’s transportation system.
Already ideas have been submitted for tackling the BQE trench and turning Atlantic Avenue into a boulevard. Definitely, Atlantic could use some pedestrian-friendly improvements. And, how about a proposal for taking a look at Carroll Park? It could use a refresh, to be sure.
From May 16 to June 17, the institute will hold a competition among international designers to create proposals for the suggested sites. In September, proposals will get published in an Atlas of Possibility for the future of New York, which will serve as the foundation for our first-ever Urban Design Week festival, which is scheduled for September 15-20.
