Sat., Dec. 31: Dig Deeper Presents New Year’s Eve Soul with Lee Fields and The Expressions
Dig Deeper once again rings in the New Year with a soul double-header of epic proportions – Lee Fields and the Expressions and Sugar Pie DeSanto backed by the Divine Soul Rhythm Band!
Lee Fields and the Expressions – Do we really need to introduce Lee Fields? Sometimes called “Little JB” as the only vocalist who can match both James Brown’s growl and powerful balladry, Lee Fields has been a regular on the NYC club scene going back to the early 1970s (complete with a brief stint in Kool & the Gang – really!). Lee began gathering new fans in the 1990s with his gritty Desco / Daptone singles and shows with Sharon Jones, followed by a string of singles and a truly stellar album “My world” with the Expressions. Lee & the Expressions have a new album in the works, and put high odds on 2012 being their year – what better way to kick it off than the stroke of midnight?
Sugar Pie DeSanto returns to her birthplace of Brooklyn for her first show in town since playing the Apollo Theatre over 40 years ago. A fiery, sassy vocalist known for her electric live shows, Sugar Pie recorded a stack of records over her career which still to this day ignite dancefloor mayhem – including “In the basement” and “Do I make myself clear” which she recorded with friend Etta James, “Go go power”, “Soulful dress”, and too many others to count. We have wanted to bring Sugar Pie home to Brooklyn for some time – what better night than NYE?
And naturally, no Dig Deeper would be complete without Mr. Robinson and DJ Honky spinning all original soul and funk 45s for the dance floor, with special guest DJs TBA. Wear your dancing shoes. You will need them.
