Gentrification Continues

By Lisa M. Collins

The Cobble Hill Towers, on Hicks St, from Warren to Baltic, is garnering some press as its owners convert the property from rent-stabilized to market rate condos. The tenants were some of the last middle-class hold outs in Cobble Hill, in the PS 29 school district, some renting from the 1950s, and paying very little. Now many of those renters are moving because they can’t afford the new $250,000 to $500,000 exclusive purchase offers (according to The New York Times) to current renters.

Earlier in the week, Georgia Kral, editor of the Carroll Gardens Patch (a new AOL online newspaper) broke a good story on renters in the Towers not pleased with repairs needed throughout the property, and the sadness some feel in having to leave.

The New York Times also featured a piece about the 130-year-old Cobble Hill Towers. Gary Buiso at The Brooklyn Paper wrote on it Monday.
