Americana Photo Show

By Alexandra Glorioso
Vanity + Consolation solo show, Joe Ann Walters
Kris Graves Projects Gallery

Through Dec. 18: The Kris Graves Projects gallery features a solo show by Joe Ann Walters, Vanity + Consolation. Walters is a Guggenheim Fellow with work at the Museum of Modern Art, and elsewhere.

Walters has been practicing photography since the early 1980s. This selection of color portraits was made between 1985 and the present. She has been described by seminal photographer William Eggleston as “one of the few independently original photographers working in color today.” These original color prints have never been exhibited together in New York.

Walters uses her small blue-collar hometown, Alton, Ill., as her continuing inspiration. She observes the intimate moments of the women, girls, children, and families pictured within the confines of the domestic space. Walters examines the complexities and forcefulness of inner life.

Walters is a Guggenheim Fellow with work in collections around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, San-Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress., St. Louis Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art, Biblioteque Nationale, and the Center for Fine Photography, Bombay, India among others. She is currently the Head of the Photography Board of Study at Purchase College, the State University of New York.

Vanity + Consolation will be on view during regular gallery hours and by appointment. For further information, contact the gallery at 917.913.1292 or by email at:
