After The Daily News focused in on that trash-strewn, abandoned-vehicle-loving, varmint-inhabiting, local-boozers-hangout of an empty lot next to Pacifico, on Pacific St. between Smith and Boerum Place in Boerum Hill, the city Sanitation Department ordered the lot owner to clean it up by Wednesday. Way to go Daily News.
If you’ve ever walked down Pacific or enjoyed margaritas at Pacifico, you’ve seen this lot. On one of the last sunny days of autumn a group of people hung out there drinking beers including a lady who may or may not have been a prostitute who I saw take money from a drunk man and follow him to his car. A Pacifico employee told the Daily News that she once heard some yelling from the lot and discovered the next day a bloody mattress there. Super gross.
The owner is 262-276 Atlantic Realty Corp., according to the News. We’ll see if they clean it by Wednesday. I see a lovely community garden there. Fresh veggies. Or a sledding hill for winter. Any more ideas?
The story says that if owners don’t comply, the city will clean the lot – then send a bill. This gets at the power of the newspapers—if the big ones focus in on an issue, action happens. We can only hope that someday soon the online news organizations will have the same power.
