Have We Learned? The 1938 Category 3 hurricane killed 10 people in New York City. Electricity was knocked out from 59th Street of Manhattan up to the Bronx and the subway lost power.
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has directed MTA officials to begin an incremental suspension of its subway, bus, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad service. MTA is attempting to shut down service approximately eight hours before sustained 39 mph winds reach the area.
Subway and bus lines will begin shutting down at 12 noon tomorrow. MTA officials urge citizens to plan early, as not everyone will be able to get on the last trains out of the city. If winds reach sustained speeds of 60 mph or if massive flooding occurs, MTA bridges will be closed. Each of MTA’s seven bridges and two tunnels will be dealt with and evacuated on a case-by-case basis.
People using Access-A-Ride should call them at 877-337-2017 in order to schedule any necessary pick ups before 12 p.m. tomorrow. There will be no Access-A-Ride pick ups after 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 27th.
If you don’t have to travel tomorrow, MTA strongly suggests staying home.
