Opening Wed., Jan. 19, through Sat., Feb. 26: Opening exhibit in Brooklyn Height’s BRIC Rotunda Gallery explores the meaning of travel, moving, possessions and memory.

The notion of travel is affected by one’s own sense of home. Home often refers to a physical place where an individual or a family rests and stores personal property. It is also a concept, a collage of all previously experienced homes, in the same way that our perception of life in general is imbued with our memories. At BRIC Rotunda Arts Gallery, the exhibit, “Neo-Nomads: Mobility, evocative objects and a sense of home,” investigates the question: What does one take along while in transit? How do these possessions become one’s “evocative object”?

Reflecting on contemporary ways of life, the Neo Nomad often constructs a definition of belongings through digital means. “Evocative objects” now often take the form of electronic media and technologies. The exhibition evokes the significance of intangible “objects” carried by the Neo Nomad. Just as an individual packs and moves one’s belongings into a box, he or she also carries experiences, odors, sound and memories. Artists in this exhibition examine their relationships to “evocative objects” as they utilize physical, emotional, and personal histories in the act of taking, leaving, moving, and remembering. Artists under consideration include Kim Beck, Ward Shelley, Sangbin Im, and McKendree Key.

Neo Nomads is collaboratively curated by Aileen Wilson, Associate Professor, Art and Design Education, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn; Anne-Laure Fayard, Assistant Professor, Department of Technology Management, Polytechnic University of NYU, Brooklyn; and Baseera Khan, past Assistant Curator for BRIC Arts|Media|Bklyn.
