Beat the Brooklyn heat with a tall glass of lemonade, Middle Eastern style. Learn how they cool down in hot desert, combining tart lemons with the sweet fresh mint. Participate in a hands-on workshop to make your own and sip on this citrusy refreshment.

Specialists like curators and archaeologists study artifacts to learn how ancient peoples once lived. There are many clues that artifacts can give—if they know how to look for them. Learn how the experts examine artifacts, as they explore rare antiquities from the museum’s collection to from Greek and Roman pottery to Egyptian jewelry.

Balancing Act to May 14 to September 4, 2011

Keeping your balance and losing your balance are a big part of growing up.  Understanding how balance plays a role in science, engineering, cultural traditions, and art is fundamental to learning.  The Balancing Act exhibit weaves a tapestry of multicultural and science-based activities for children to experience different aspects of balance firsthand, including constructing a mobile from fanciful shapes, levers and counterweights; walking a tightrope; playing stacking games with featherweight blocks; operating a teeter-totter for plush toys; building a balance and motion machine of runways and ramps; and creating artwork based on ideas of harmony, scale, and aesthetic balance.  Co-sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings.
