The Marilyn Series

By Alexandra Glorioso

Don't Bother to Knock
Playing Fri., July 1 at BAM

Fri., July 1 to Sun., July 17: The Marilyn Series at BAM. “She was an absolute genius as a comedic actress, with an extraordinary sense for comedic dialogue. It was a God-given gift… Nobody else is in that orbit; everyone else is earthbound by comparison.”—Billy Wilder

“Say, they told me you were stupid… you certainly don’t seem stupid to me!” —Mr. Esmond Sr., Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Few actresses of the 20th century grabbed the public imagination quite like Marilyn Monroe. Though her career spanned little more than a decade, she infiltrated every cultural sphere, inspiring artists from Andy Warhol and Norman Mailer to Billy Wilder and Bruce Conner. A comedienne, she was also a modern actor with a range more complex than typically recognized. While the iconic moments of her career like “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and the subway grate in The Seven Year Itch maintain a cultural significance nearly unmatched in cinema, there is so much more to discover about this enigmatic superstar, as this series reveals. All films in 35mm.

To coincide with Marilyn!, Posteritati is hosting an exhibition of vintage Marilyn Monroe posters. Showgirl includes domestic and international posters, from her breakthrough role in The Asphalt Jungle (1950) to star-making roles in Some Like It Hot (1959) and The Seven Year Itch (1955) to her last silver-screen appearance in The Misfits (1961). Showgirl will be on display at Posteritati’s SoHo gallery from June 18 through July 29. Info
