Taste of Brooklyn

Fri., Aug. 26 to Sun., Aug. 28: Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s Taste of Brooklyn ends with a W.O.R.D. UP! and cross-cultural treats.

Celebrate the yummy diversity of Brooklyn during the final Taste of Brooklyn Weekend.  Discover some urban culinary treasures while hanging out in the World Brooklyn gallery, attend culinary workshops, collect recipes and hear a special W.O.R.D. UP! reading by Don Paco Lopez Jr.! Due to popular demand they recommend arriving early to W.O.R.D. UP! as seating is on first-come, first-served basis.

Guest chef’s are Brooklyn’s own Don Paco Lopez Jr., Pierre Thiam, Colette Burnett and Madea the Organic Soul Chef. SPECIAL W.O.R.D. UP! reading by Don Paco Lopez Jr. from the book “A Day at Grandpa’s Bakery”.

During this weekend of gastronomic exploration families will have the opportunity to make and sample treats from cultures across the globe as top “Brooklyn” chef’s will be on hand to “serve” up special treats. Complete with family fun for all, the Museum is the place to be.

Sample delicious cakes from Master Baker, Don Paco Lopez Jr. (Don Paco Lopez Panaderia – a highlighted permanent bakery in their World Brooklyn exhibition); African pastels from renowned Chef Pierre Thiam (author of “Yolele! Recipes from the Heart of Senegal”); Super Salads from the Organic Soul Chef MADEA and wings from Super Wings (Food Network’s featured winner of the Spicy Chicken Wing challenge) voted #1 “Best Hot Wings in New York”.

W.O.R.D. UP!  – Words of Real Distinction featuring Master Baker and author Don Paco Lopez Jr.

W.O.R.D. UP! presents a unique opportunity for lifelong learners to share and enjoy the power of literacy.  Join them  them for a celebratory reading in honor of Taste of Brooklyn Weekend and Mexican family customs as author Don Paco Lopez Jr. reads A Day at Grandpa’s Bakery (graphics by Jose Luis Labastida) – a children’s book about 2 brothers, Paquito and Santi, who enjoy visiting their grandfather’s bakery. Grandpa is a baker who loves to show them the different shapes and figures they can create with dough. This is a story where family values, traditions and creativity play an important role in kids’ lives.   Due to popular demand they recommend arriving early to W.O.R.D UP! as seating is on first-come, first-served basis.

Tres Leches Delight with Master Baker Don Paco Lopez Jr.

The tasty Tres Leches cake is a tasty treat all on its own. Here you will learn how to make a cake with layers of pound cake, using fresh strawberries as a filling. Thirst-Quenchers! Lucious Lassi

Discover a delicious traditional drink from India! A thick sweet lassi provides relief from heat, not only from the scorching sun, but also from fiery herbs and spices! Blend yummy yogurt and fresh fruit to sample this smooth specialty!

Meet and Greet: Creatures of the Sea

Discover how diverse life really is under the sea by exploring animals up close and personal!

Salads are the go-to food to beat the scorching summer heat.  But salads are much more than just lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes.   We’ll be preparing a refreshing watermelon mint salad that’s sure to cool you off while tantalizing your tastebuds!
